Moyes’ Rebuild: Everton’s Striker Regret After £25m Sale

David Moyes has steadied the ship at Everton since taking over, but the club’s search for a reliable goalscorer continues. While new signing Carlos Alcaraz adds creativity in midfield, fans hoped for a striker to be signed in January.

Everton tried to bring in Brighton’s Evan Ferguson on loan, but he joined West Ham instead. This leaves Beto as the main option up front with Dominic Calvert-Lewin injured. The lack of a clinical finisher may come back to haunt Everton, especially considering they sold Moise Kean to Juventus for £25 million in 2023.

Kean struggled initially at Goodison Park after joining for £25m in 2019, scoring just two Premier League goals before being loaned out. However, the Italian has found his form at Fiorentina this season with 17 goals in 27 games across all competitions.

His powerful, direct style could have been ideal for Moyes’ system – similar to how Michail Antonio thrived under the Scottish manager at West Ham. Kean ranks in the top 10% of Serie A strikers for successful dribbles, highlighting his improved movement and ball-carrying ability.

While Everton have climbed to safety under Moyes, sitting 9 points above the drop zone, a clinical striker remains a missing piece. The decision to cut ties with Kean prematurely may prove an expensive mistake as the 23-year-old develops into the “scary” attacking threat Everton desperately need.
