Nabil Bentaleb’s Inspirational Return to Football Following Cardiac Arrest
Lille OSC midfielder Nabil Bentaleb, 30, has been cleared to resume his football career after an eight-month hiatus following a cardiac arrest during a casual game. Bentaleb recently shared how his former Tottenham Hotspur teammate, Christian Eriksen, 33, provided crucial support during his recovery period.
Bentaleb and Eriksen were teammates at Tottenham from 2013 to 2016, appearing in 53 matches together. Eriksen himself experienced a cardiac arrest during a Euro 2021 match between Denmark and Finland. Remarkably, he returned to competitive play less than a year later, first joining Brentford and then moving to Manchester United.
Following Eriksen’s path, Bentaleb is now poised for his own comeback. After receiving medical clearance, he rejoined Lille’s first-team training on Thursday. While no specific timeline has been set for his return to match play, Bentaleb expressed his eagerness to get back on the field during a Friday press conference.
“The journey has been filled with ups and downs, both physically and mentally. I’ve discovered a new level of mental resilience within myself. Doubts were inevitable, but I’ve worked tirelessly over these past eight months. I’ve become intimately familiar with the training grounds! Sleep has been elusive, but I’ve remained focused on my recovery and training,” Bentaleb shared.
He then revealed the invaluable communication with Eriksen: “I had the opportunity to speak with Christian, which was immensely helpful. When everything seemed uncertain, he provided guidance and prepared me for what to expect in the recovery process.”
Bentaleb’s story serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of support from those who have faced similar challenges in professional sports.
