Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi shared his thoughts on his team’s victory over Liverpool in the Champions League Round of 16 in an interview with CBS.
Al-Khelaifi was asked to compare this match to other significant European nights experienced since his appointment in 2011 following QSI’s acquisition of the club.
“I think it’s one of the best, if not the best,” he responded, “[It was at] Anfield [and] to win against Liverpool, the best club today in Europe. They finished first in the league phase and are the Premier League leaders. I think it’s something very very special honestly.”
Significance of Liverpool Victory in PSG’s Champions League History
PSG has had significant moments in the Champions League during Al-Khelaifi’s leadership. For example, Les Parisiens reached the Champions League final in 2020 but were defeated by Bayern Munich.
However, the recent match against Liverpool felt particularly special. The team showed resilience after a 1-0 first-leg defeat, despite dominating the game, and approached the second leg with a winning mentality.
Adding to the historic nature, this game marked the first time PSG participated in a penalty shootout in the Champions League.
