Newcastle and PIF Expected to Pursue £75m Star Marc Guehi in Summer Transfer Window
Newcastle United are reportedly gearing up for a significant transfer move this summer, with Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi emerging as a prime target. After facing financial constraints due to Premier League Sustainability Rules (PSR) in recent windows, the club’s Saudi owners PIF are expected to loosen the purse strings and back a major acquisition.
The Magpies have long admired Guehi, viewing the 24-year-old England international as a potential cornerstone of their backline for years to come. While Crystal Palace demanded £75 million for the center-back in January, their asking price could decrease if Guehi declines to sign a new contract at Selhurst Park.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe remains optimistic about his current squad despite making no January additions, describing it as “lighter in numbers but high in quality.” However, the departure of Lloyd Kelly to Juventus has left the team somewhat short at center-back, increasing the urgency to reinforce that position.
Guehi has earned rave reviews for his performances at both club and international level. His Crystal Palace teammate Eberechi Eze lauded him as an “incredible player” and a natural leader, praising his maturity and readiness to perform at the highest level. Guehi’s standout displays at Euro 2024, where he was a key figure for England, have only enhanced his reputation.
While primarily known for his defensive prowess, Guehi has also shown an attacking threat this season, scoring three Premier League goals and earning a nomination for January’s goal of the month award. This all-around ability makes him an even more attractive prospect for Newcastle.
The potential for a reduced transfer fee adds further incentive for Newcastle to pursue Guehi, but they are likely to face stiff competition from other top clubs. The Magpies will need to present a compelling case to land their long-term target and bolster their defensive options for the future.
