Newcastle consider move for “powerhouse” striker to replace Isak
Newcastle United are reportedly targeting Sporting Lisbon striker Viktor Gyokeres as a potential replacement for Alexander Isak, amid interest in the Swedish star from other clubs.
Isak has been in outstanding form for Newcastle this season, scoring 15 goals in 20 Premier League appearances. His performances have attracted attention from top clubs, with Arsenal said to be particularly interested.
While Newcastle hope to keep Isak, they are preparing contingency plans in case he departs. Sporting director Paul Mitchell has identified Gyokeres as a prime target to fill the potential void.
The 26-year-old Gyokeres has been prolific since joining Sporting from Coventry City in 2023 for £17 million. He scored 43 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions last season as Sporting won the Portuguese league title.
This campaign, Gyokeres has continued his goalscoring exploits with 22 goals in 18 league matches. His all-round game has also impressed, with the striker described as a “powerhouse” by analysts.
While Gyokeres has a €100 million release clause, reports suggest Sporting may be willing to negotiate a lower fee this summer. Newcastle would likely face competition from other top European clubs for his signature.
The Swedish international’s physicality, finishing ability and work rate could make him an ideal fit for Eddie Howe’s system at Newcastle. His compatriot Isak has thrived under Howe, which may appeal to Gyokeres.
Newcastle fans will hope Isak remains at St James’ Park long-term. However, in Gyokeres, the club appear to have identified a potentially worthy successor should their star striker depart.
