Newcastle target £25m “dangerous” star as potential Barnes replacement
Newcastle United are considering a move for Borussia Dortmund’s versatile forward Donyell Malen as a potential replacement for Harvey Barnes. With Barnes potentially leaving St. James’ Park this January, the Magpies have identified the £25 million-rated Dutch international as a prime target.
Malen, described as “very dangerous” by former teammate Mario Gotze, has impressed in the Bundesliga primarily as a right winger. However, his versatility allows him to play across the front line, including on the left where Barnes typically operates.
The 25-year-old has a proven goalscoring record, netting 55 times during his time at PSV Eindhoven. At Dortmund, he’s continued to be productive, scoring 11 league goals from the right wing last season.
Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is keen to bolster his attacking options as the club pushes for a top-four finish. Malen’s ability to play multiple positions makes him an attractive option, especially with the club potentially needing to balance their books due to Financial Fair Play regulations.
If Newcastle can complete a deal for Malen, it would be a statement of intent and provide strong competition for Anthony Gordon while also offering cover for the injury-prone Callum Wilson up front.
The Magpies will need to act quickly, however, as Aston Villa are also reportedly interested in the Dutch forward. Dortmund are said to be holding out for around £25 million, a fee that could prove excellent value given Malen’s quality and potential.
