Newcastle United Eyeing £25m Goalkeeper Familiar to Eddie Howe
Newcastle United are reportedly considering a £25 million bid for Southampton goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale this summer. Manager Eddie Howe, who previously worked with Ramsdale at Bournemouth, is said to be a strong admirer of the England international.
The Magpies are in the market for a new goalkeeper as they look to secure a long-term replacement for Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka. Ramsdale has become available following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League, triggering a release clause in his contract.
Despite a challenging season with Southampton, Ramsdale’s talent has been praised by former professionals. Arsenal legend David Seaman once described Ramsdale’s performances as “phenomenal,” highlighting his ability to make crucial saves consistently.
At 26 years old, Ramsdale is still considered young for a goalkeeper and has potential for further development. His ball-playing skills could be an asset for Newcastle, potentially allowing them to improve their build-up play from the back.
While other goalkeepers such as Burnley’s James Trafford, Wolfsburg’s Kamil Grabara, and Liverpool’s Caoimhin Kelleher have also been linked with Newcastle, Ramsdale’s previous connection to Howe could give him an edge in the transfer race.
As Newcastle aim to build on their recent success, including their EFL Cup triumph and potential Champions League qualification, strengthening the goalkeeper position appears to be a key priority for the upcoming transfer window.
