Newcastle United Prioritizes Scalvini for Defensive Reinforcement

According to reports from The Times, Newcastle United has set their sights on Atalanta`s promising young defender Giorgio Scalvini as their top defensive priority for the upcoming transfer window.

The 21-year-old Italian center-back has emerged as one of the most promising defensive talents in Serie A, despite facing injury setbacks over the past year. Scalvini`s progress was hampered by a cruciate ligament injury at the end of the 2024-25 season, causing him to miss the European Championship with the Italian national team. He briefly returned to action between late 2024 and early 2025 but unfortunately suffered a shoulder injury that sidelined him for the latter part of the most recent campaign.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe views Scalvini as a potential long-term replacement for aging defenders Dan Burn and Fabian Schär, both 33 years old. The Magpies are reportedly considering a bid in the region of £30 million (approximately €35 million) for the young Italian international.

Scalvini, a product of Atalanta`s renowned youth academy, has already amassed 89 appearances in Serie A, contributing four goals from his defensive position. Additionally, he has earned eight caps for the Italian national team since making his senior debut in 2022.

As Newcastle looks to bolster their defensive options and build for the future, Scalvini`s combination of youth, potential, and top-flight experience makes him an attractive prospect for the Premier League club.
