Newcastle United target Barcelona defender Eric García for January transfer
According to recent reports, Newcastle United have set their sights on Barcelona defender Eric García as a potential January transfer target. The Magpies are looking to bolster their defensive options for the second half of the Premier League season.
Manager Eddie Howe is eager to strengthen his squad and has identified the center-back position as an area for improvement. While Newcastle have been linked with other defenders like Abdukodir Khusanov of Lens and Joel Ordonez of Club Brugge, García has now emerged as another option.
Barcelona are reportedly willing to let the 23-year-old Spaniard leave in January for a fee of around £21 million. This could represent good value for Newcastle, given García’s experience playing for top clubs like Barcelona and Manchester City.
The defender has struggled for consistent playing time at Barcelona this season, often being limited to substitute appearances. However, he still ranks highly for tackles completed compared to other center-backs.
García’s previous Premier League experience with Manchester City could give him an advantage over Newcastle’s other defensive targets who have not played in England before. At £21 million, he could prove to be a shrewd acquisition to help Newcastle compete at the highest level.
While Chelsea are also said to be interested, Newcastle will hope they can convince García to make the move to St James’ Park this January. His signing would provide a boost to the Magpies’ defensive options for the second half of the campaign.
