Palladino: Fiorentina’s Enthusiasm Strengthened Despite Napoli Defeat

Fiorentina’s coach, Raffaele Palladino, expressed his belief that the team’s performance against Napoli, despite a painful 2-1 loss, should significantly “boost our enthusiasm.” He acknowledged the inherent risks in their tactical approach for this match.

The Viola are currently experiencing a downturn in form, having suffered defeats in five of their last six games across all competitions. The only positive result during this period was a narrow 1-0 victory over Lecce.

The physical strain from their recent UEFA Europa Conference League match against Panathinaikos in Athens, which ended in a 3-2 defeat, was also a factor. However, Fiorentina showed resilience and fought until the final whistle at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona.

Albert Gudmundsson’s goal, assisted by a clever back-heel from Moise Kean, kept Napoli under pressure until the end. Nevertheless, goals from Romelu Lukaku and Giacomo Raspadori were enough to secure the win for Napoli.

Speaking to DAZN, Palladino stated that they faced a very strong Napoli team, a team constructed to compete for the Scudetto. He praised Fiorentina’s courage and character, noting their strong performance. Despite conceding in the first half, they remained competitive and created significant problems for Napoli after halftime.

Palladino emphasized the need for continued work with the team, but reiterated that this match provides a foundation to build upon and increase their enthusiasm. He concluded by mentioning the important upcoming final on Thursday.

Fiorentina’s recent poor results have placed them five points behind Bologna, who currently occupy sixth place in the league table. Qualifying for European competition is becoming increasingly challenging.

Injuries to key players, including some of their January signings, have contributed to Fiorentina’s difficulties this season.

Palladino commented on Nicolò Fagioli’s development, describing him as a potential champion with exceptional technique and vision, who is elevating the team’s overall quality. He also highlighted Gudmundsson’s importance and the impact of his previous injury absence. Palladino expressed hope for the return to fitness of Folorunsho, Colpani, and Adli.

Regarding his substitutions, specifically the removal of centre-backs Pietro Comuzzo and Luca Ranieri, Palladino explained that it was a calculated risk to engage Napoli defensively. Comuzzo suffered from cramps, and Ranieri has accumulated significant playing time this season. He clarified that these were precautionary substitutions to provide rest, not due to injuries.
