Pep Guardiola May Replace Foden with Man City’s Promising 17-Year-Old Talent
Manchester City star Phil Foden has failed to replicate his exceptional form from last season, when he won the PFA Player of the Year award. In the 2023/24 campaign, Foden contributed an impressive 40 goals and assists as City retained the Premier League title. However, his performances have declined significantly this season for both club and country.
Foden’s recent showing for England against Albania highlighted his struggles. In 74 minutes, he managed just one cross into the box, had no shots on target, failed to complete any dribbles, and lost possession nine times. Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane noted Foden’s lack of confidence and impact, stating he no longer expects anything from the young midfielder.
Foden’s Decline at Manchester City
Foden’s goal contributions have dropped sharply this season, with just 10 goals and 6 assists across all competitions so far. His performance metrics also show a concerning trend. According to FBref, Foden ranks below the 50th percentile among Premier League attacking midfielders for progressive carries, successful take-ons, and progressive passes received per 90 minutes.
A Potential Academy Replacement
With Foden struggling, 17-year-old academy prospect Divine Mukasa could be poised for a breakthrough. The attacking midfielder, who joined City from West Ham in 2023, has impressed at youth level with 16 goals and 31 assists in 53 appearances across various age groups.
Scouts have praised Mukasa’s spatial awareness, technique, composure, and decision-making. His versatility allows him to play as a number 10, in deeper midfield, or on the left wing. While comparisons to Kevin De Bruyne may be premature, Mukasa’s creative output at youth level is remarkable.
As City’s title hopes fade this season, Guardiola may consider giving Mukasa some first-team minutes to aid his development. If nurtured properly, the teenager could become a star and potentially challenge Foden for a starting spot in the coming years.
