On March 14th, Luis de la Fuente will announce the Spain squad for the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals. This upcoming international break is expected to bring some fresh faces to the national team, as several players who aren’t regular selections are currently performing at a high level. It’s worth noting that the Spanish national team has recently changed its entire coaching staff, just six months after becoming European champions, following the departure of Pablo Amo.
The current European champions will return to action in the international break in March. Luis de la Fuente will soon reveal the squad list for the two national team matches, and he recently suggested there will be surprises. “There will surely be new faces. This year is proving tough with injuries, but the team is very settled, and there are high-level players knocking on the national team door,” stated the coach. These are the players who could be included in the squad:
Goalkeepers and Defenders
In goal, one potential newcomer could be Joan García. The Espanyol goalkeeper is in excellent form and could receive his first senior call-up. In defense, possible additions include Raúl Asencio, a central defender who has broken into the Real Madrid team impressively; Dean Huijsen, a Bournemouth central defender who has been a Premier League revelation; Carmona, a Sevilla full-back enjoying a great season; or Andrés García, a full-back recently signed by Aston Villa from Levante.
Midfielders and Forwards
In midfield, several less regular players could find a place in De la Fuente’s list, but one name stands out: Isco Alarcón. The Malaga native, now recovered from injury, is one of La Liga’s best performers and could return to the national team. Other players who might be in the coach’s plans include Pablo Barrios, Atlético Madrid midfielder, or Sancet, who is playing very well for Athletic Bilbao. Dani Ceballos was a potential call-up, but his injury will prevent his inclusion. Finally, in attack, Marco Asensio could feature, as he is performing at a high level for Aston Villa since joining them. Samu Aghehowa, who is in great form for Porto, could also make his debut for the senior national team.
The Spanish national team will face the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League quarter-finals. The first leg will be played on March 20th in Rotterdam, and the return leg on March 23rd in Valencia. Everything is practically ready, and the only thing missing is to know the selected players.
