Ranieri: ‘Roma Showed Fighting Spirit, Tie with Athletic Club Remains Even’

Claudio Ranieri maintains that the Europa League confrontation with Athletic Club is still finely poised at ’50-50’ following Roma’s thrilling first-leg victory at the Stadio Olimpico. He emphasized, ‘We are aware of Roma’s resilience and their determination to contest every ball.’

The match at the Stadio Olimpico was filled with drama. Inaki Williams initially gave Athletic Club the lead, but Angelino equalized for Roma just six minutes later.

Despite Yeray Alvarez’s dismissal after receiving a second yellow card for a foul on Eldor Shomurudov, Roma persisted until the very last moment. Their efforts paid off when Shomurodov converted Alexis Saelemaekers’ assist, securing a 2-1 win.

Ranieri’s decision to substitute Paulo Dybala and Artem Dovbyk with 20 minutes remaining raised eyebrows, but these substitutions ultimately proved to be game-changers.

“Our strategy was to have numerous options available from the outset and to anticipate both favorable and challenging scenarios,” Ranieri stated.

“It was an extremely challenging game, and the return leg on their territory will be even more demanding. However, we are also confident in our own strength and our commitment to fighting for every ball. This is only halftime; the situation is still balanced at 50-50.”

Tommaso Baldanzi’s inclusion in the starting lineup was unexpected, and despite missing a clear scoring opportunity in the first half, he delivered an impressive performance, alongside Roma’s academy graduate Niccolò Pisilli.

“Observing them in training convinced me of their readiness. Baldanzi is currently in excellent form. I had noticed their difficulties against Atletico Madrid when facing a player operating between midfield and attack, so I anticipated he could pose problems for them. He delivered an outstanding performance.”

Zeki Celik, who was initially doubtful due to a minor injury, also played a significant role, contributing both defensively and providing the assist for Angelino’s equalizing goal.

“I believe that trusting in players is paramount for any coach. Mistakes are inevitable for everyone, and dwelling on them can erode player confidence. I highlight areas for improvement but also empower them to attack and create problems for the opposition. These players are exceptional; they are fully committed, which is incredibly rewarding for a coach.”

While a one-goal lead is slender going into the second leg in Bilbao next Thursday, it represents a significant stride towards the Europa League quarter-finals and reinforces Roma’s recent strong form, marked by six victories and a draw in all competitions.

“We need to maintain this momentum, but we must reduce passing errors and accelerate our ball movement. It was particularly challenging today because the two Williams brothers possess incredible speed, almost like they are on motorcycles,” Ranieri joked.

“We have established a solid foundation, and now it’s time to refine the minor details that can elevate a good team to greatness.”

Ranieri has been instrumental in transforming the squad, becoming their third coach this season after previous changes. He came out of retirement to aid his beloved Roma in overcoming a tumultuous season.

“My philosophy is simple: you may not always win, but you must always fight until the end. I encourage my teams to have faith in their approach, and if things don’t go our way, we acknowledge our opponents,” concluded the experienced coach.

“In moments of adversity, giving up is not an option. Perseverance is key. If you keep pushing forward, eventually things will turn around, and you will achieve what seemed unattainable just a couple of months prior.”
