Ranieri: Roma’s Missed Chances Nearly Gave Me a Heart Attack
Claudio Ranieri expressed both satisfaction and frustration after Roma’s narrow 1-0 victory against Lecce, extending their winning streak to seven consecutive Serie A matches. The win keeps Roma in contention for a Champions League spot, despite a challenging start to the season.
The match at Stadio Via del Mare saw Roma dominate but struggle to convert numerous opportunities. Artem Dovbyk finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes from time, securing all three points for the Giallorossi.
“We must always believe until the final whistle,” Ranieri told reporters. “It was a tough match, but the team maintained focus throughout. We squandered some easy chances and nearly gifted them an opportunity with a careless mistake in our own half.”
Ranieri noted improvement in Dovbyk’s performance, who had initially struggled to adapt to Serie A. “We’re constantly working to motivate him. These goals will boost his confidence,” the coach explained.
Roma’s Defensive Solidity
Roma’s defense has been particularly impressive, conceding just one goal during their seven-match winning run. When asked about the team’s Champions League aspirations, Ranieri remained cautious: “It’s too early to tell. I’ve told the players we must finish the season without regrets. We’ll give our all in the remaining eight matches and see where we stand.”
The veteran coach joked about the stress of managing Roma’s wasteful finishing: “I told the players they’re trying to send me to an early grave! It’s a good thing I’ve had all my cardiac tests!”
As for his future with the club, Ranieri deflected questions with his trademark humor: “Another Ranieri doesn’t exist! I hope whoever they get next is younger!”
