Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid: Penalty correctly awarded to visitors

In the 34th minute of the Spanish La Liga match between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, referee Cesar Soto Grado made the right decision by awarding a penalty against Real’s Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Real Madrid defender committed a careless foul three minutes earlier, extending his leg and catching Lino’s shin with his studs. Initially, the referee did not deem it a foul, but changed his decision after VAR intervention by Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea and reviewing the video replay on the pitchside monitor.

Atletico’s Alvarez converted the penalty in the 35th minute to give the visitors a 1-0 lead. Real Madrid equalized in the 50th minute through Mbappe, with the match ending in a 1-1 draw.

The result keeps both Madrid rivals in contention near the top of the La Liga table. This derby clash showcased the importance of VAR in modern football, ensuring crucial decisions are reviewed and corrected when necessary.
