Today marks 21 years since the legendary Italian footballer Roberto Baggio bid farewell to professional football. The iconic player, known as “Il Divin Codino” (The Divine Ponytail), played his final match for Brescia against AC Milan at San Siro stadium.
Reflecting on this milestone, Baggio shared a nostalgic photo from his last game on Instagram, expressing his heartfelt gratitude: “It`s been 21 years since I said goodbye to football. A lifetime has passed off the pitch, yet I`m still fortunate to feel the fans` love every day. I`m eternally grateful to those who continue to show their affection for me in various ways.”
The post was accompanied by Bruce Springsteen`s “Hungry Heart,” a nod to Baggio`s admiration for the American rock star. In fact, Baggio attended one of Springsteen`s concerts in Ferrara last year, alongside another Italian football great, Massimo Ambrosini.
At 58, Baggio`s career spans an impressive list of top-tier Italian clubs, including Vicenza, Fiorentina, Juventus, AC Milan, Bologna, Inter Milan, and Brescia. His remarkable tally of 205 goals in 452 Serie A appearances is a testament to his exceptional skill and longevity in the sport.
Baggio`s trophy cabinet boasts two Serie A titles (one each with Juventus and AC Milan), a Coppa Italia, and a UEFA Cup with Juventus. The pinnacle of his individual achievements came in 1993 when he was awarded the prestigious Ballon d`Or while playing for Juventus.
Even in retirement, Baggio remains connected to Italian football. He was recently spotted among other calcio legends at the Coppa Italia Final in Rome, demonstrating his enduring presence in the sport he graced for so many years.
As fans and fellow players alike remember Baggio`s retirement two decades on, his legacy as one of football`s most gifted and beloved figures continues to shine brightly in the annals of the beautiful game.
