Mason Greenwood, aged 23, quickly became a key player for Olympique Marseille in his early months with the club. Across 24 appearances, the Englishman is enjoying one of his most productive seasons, having scored 15 goals. Recently, while his goal tally remains consistent, Greenwood’s overall influence on Marseille’s play has decreased. Manager Roberto De Zerbi suggests this might be a tactical shift, with Greenwood being relieved of some defensive duties to focus on attacking. However, De Zerbi believes Greenwood is capable of greater contributions.
Speaking at a press conference, Roberto De Zerbi reiterated his faith in Greenwood’s potential but insisted he expects more from the player.
“I wanted him here, I said it repeatedly. He was the first player I contacted, even before my own Marseille signing. I had already spoken with his father. No one respects him more than I do,” De Zerbi stated regarding Greenwood’s acquisition by Marseille.
“But that doesn’t change my expectations: I expect more from him. He must do more because his current level isn’t sufficient. If he aims to become a champion, he needs greater consistency, more sacrifice, and increased determination.”
“Otherwise, we, as a team, revert to inconsistency: a strong match followed by a defeat, then a victory… It’s too erratic, like waves. And that’s something I dislike.”
Greenwood joined the club from Manchester United this summer for approximately €31.5 million and was initially one of the league’s most impactful attacking players.
The former Manchester United player has been revitalizing his career at the Stade Vélodrome since his move from England. In 2022, Greenwood faced charges of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behavior, and assault. Consequently, he was sidelined at Manchester United and spent the subsequent season on loan at Getafe. All charges have since been dropped, with Greenwood denying all allegations.
