Roberto De Zerbi Reflects on Brighton Departure and Marseille Connection

In a recent press conference, Olympique de Marseille’s new manager Roberto De Zerbi shared his thoughts on leaving Brighton and his current experience in Marseille. The Italian coach emphasized the significance of emotional connections in his work, stating, “I require a strong bond with my workplace to fully express myself. I can’t work without investing my heart entirely.”

De Zerbi spoke fondly of his time at Brighton, recalling the strong relationships he built with players and supporters. “Leaving was never easy,” he admitted, hinting at the emotional toll of his departure following disagreements with the club’s leadership over future plans.

Explaining his decision to join Marseille, De Zerbi said, “I came to Marseille because it offered what I was seeking – an environment that could inspire me. Both the city and the club resonate with my personality, and many of our players share my passion for the game.”

The coach described his role at Marseille as more than just a job, emphasizing the emotional rewards of connecting with the team and fans. “When you establish a connection with these people, it transcends work. You eagerly anticipate each training session and match,” he explained.

Looking ahead, De Zerbi mentioned his collaboration with Mehdi Benatia in planning for the future. He expressed his commitment to giving his all to the supporters, highlighting the unique ability of football to evoke strong emotions in people. “It’s the only profession where you can stir such deep feelings in strangers,” he concluded.
