Roma Faces Defensive Setback as Rensch Sidelined for Porto Match
Roma’s defensive plans have been disrupted as Dutch fullback Devyne Rensch is ruled out of the upcoming Europa League playoff against Porto. Rensch has suffered a minor strain in his right adductor muscle, forcing him to train separately from the squad. The club is hopeful he may recover in time for the return leg on February 20th, but he will also miss the away game against Parma.
In Rensch’s absence, Saelemaekers is expected to start on the right flank in Portugal. Rensch’s versatility, able to play on both sides of defense, had secured his place in the UEFA squad list at the expense of Salah-Eddine, who typically backs up Angeliño on the left.
As Roma prepares for Thursday’s 21:00 kickoff in Porto for the first leg of the Europa League playoffs, the team resumed training following a rest day granted by manager Ranieri. Hummels and Paredes are back in contention and likely to start, with Koné joining them in midfield. The defensive line is expected to feature Mancini and Ndicka, with Angeliño on the left.
Up front, Dovbyk is set to lead the attack, potentially supported by Dybala and possibly Pellegrini, though the latter may face another stint on the bench. If Pellegrini doesn’t start, Pisilli could step in, potentially shifting the formation to a 3-5-2.
This injury setback forces Ranieri to reassess his tactical approach as Roma seeks to overcome Porto in this crucial European fixture.
