AS Roma has officially confirmed the loan transfer of Saud Abdulhamid to French club RC Lens. The deal includes an option for Lens to purchase the player permanently for a fee reportedly between €2-3 million.
Abdulhamid, a 26-year-old right-back from Saudi Arabia, joined Roma just a year ago from Al-Hilal for €2.5 million. However, he struggled to secure regular playing time at the Stadio Olimpico, making only eight appearances across all competitions during his time with the Italian club. Despite limited opportunities, he managed to score one goal and provide one assist.
The Saudi defender made history as the first player from his country to feature in Serie A. His move to Lens comes after Roma had initially been in advanced talks to send him to Toulouse FC, but those negotiations fell through due to issues with non-EU player slots.
Lens creatively announced Abdulhamid`s arrival with a video inspired by The Simpsons, showcasing their enthusiasm for the new signing. This move provides Abdulhamid with a fresh opportunity to gain more playing time and potentially secure a permanent transfer to the French Ligue 1 side at the end of the season.
For Roma, this loan deal allows them to offload a player who was not part of their immediate plans, while potentially recouping their initial investment if Lens decides to exercise the purchase option.
