Following Udinese`s 3-0 defeat to AC Milan, coach Kosta Runjaic conceded that his tactical changes were ineffective against a superior Milan side. Despite previously being undefeated, including a victory over Inter Milan, Udinese struggled to compete at the Bluenergy Stadium.
Runjaic explained to Sky Sport Italia, “We switched to a 4-4-2 formation, which seemed like a good idea. However, the issue wasn`t the tactics but rather how individual players interpreted their roles. We failed to press effectively, especially on our right flank.”
The coach took responsibility for the tactical shift but emphasized that individual errors were the primary cause of their struggles. “We invited Milan to attack, and at this level, such mistakes are costly. Tonight, Milan simply outperformed us in every aspect of the game,” Runjaic admitted.
Addressing the team`s lack of energy, Runjaic noted that some players, like Jurgen Ekkelenkamp, were still regaining match fitness after injuries. He also acknowledged the challenge of integrating new signings, including Nicolò Zaniolo, into the team`s playing style.
“We demand a lot in terms of running and defensive structure. Players who arrived late in the transfer window need time to adapt. We don`t have the luxury of friendly matches to experiment; we must do so gradually in competitive fixtures,” Runjaic explained.
Looking ahead, the coach sees the upcoming Coppa Italia match against Palermo as an opportunity to test new strategies and give playing time to recent arrivals. Despite the heavy defeat, Runjaic remains focused on learning from the experience and improving the team`s performance in future matches.
