Plans have been revealed for the demolition of the famous San Siro stadium, home to AC Milan and Inter Milan. While most of the iconic Stadio Meazza will be torn down, the southeast corner including part of the Curva Sud will be preserved.
The clubs have received approval to purchase the San Siro area and construct a new stadium nearby. Roberto Spagnolo, who oversaw Atalanta`s new stadium project, explained the demolition process:
Demolition Methodology
“The first phase involves removing non-concrete elements like glass, barriers and doors. Then, giant hydraulic shears will be used to take down the main structure. Finally, the concrete will be separated from the steel reinforcements.”
Preserving Part of the Stadium`s History
The demolition will begin from the roof and third tier, working downwards. Notably, the southeast corner of the Meazza, including sections of the `orange` stand and Curva Sud, will remain intact as a memorial to the stadium`s legacy.
The new stadium is slated for construction in San Siro`s current parking area. Demolition of the old stadium is expected to take place in 2031 or 2032, after the new venue is completed.
