San Siro Stadium Faces Pivotal Moment as City Council Prepares to Vote

Monday marks a critical juncture for the legendary San Siro stadium in Milan. The city council is slated to cast a decisive vote on whether to approve the sale of the venue, including the Giuseppe Meazza Stadium, to football clubs AC Milan and Inter Milan.

Key Points on the San Siro Situation

Earlier this month, Milan`s mayor Giuseppe Sala confirmed an agreement to sell the San Siro complex to the two clubs. Their goal is to extensively renovate the grounds to meet modern standards and potentially host matches for EURO 2032.

The city council, comprising 48 members plus the mayor, requires a majority vote to approve the sale. If the initial vote results in a tie, a single revote will occur. Should the second vote also end in a deadlock, the proposal will be rejected.

Recent reports suggest the council is evenly divided, with only one member remaining undecided. This makes Monday`s vote unpredictable and highly consequential.

Arguments For and Against the Sale

Those opposing the sale argue that transferring valuable city property to US-based investment firms that own the clubs could lead to future profit-driven resales. Proponents contend that Milan needs a state-of-the-art venue capable of hosting major sporting and entertainment events.

The council is expected to convene for the vote at approximately 16:30 local time (15:30 BST) on Monday, with a decision anticipated shortly thereafter.
