San Siro Stadium Plans Face Continued Opposition
The future of Milan’s San Siro stadium remains uncertain as plans for its redevelopment continue to face obstacles. Despite efforts by AC Milan and Inter Milan to move forward with a new stadium project, recent developments have raised fresh doubts.
Milan Mayor Beppe Sala expressed cautious optimism about the plans, stating: “We can make it happen, knowing we’ll face opposition and legal challenges from some parties. The risk of AC Milan moving to San Donato is very high, as they’ve already invested significantly there. However, if we can’t make progress by October, it becomes difficult to proceed.”
However, controversy erupted over the timing of a preliminary services conference, with critics arguing it was hastily convened before the April 30 deadline for other interested parties to submit proposals. Residents near San Siro voiced concerns about the project’s impact on the neighborhood, including the loss of green space and questions about asbestos removal.
Adding to the turmoil, local activist groups announced plans to file an appeal with the administrative court to block the sale of the San Siro area to the football clubs. Green Party leader Carlo Monguzzi criticized the process, stating: “Holding a preliminary conference while bids are still open makes no legal sense. We will continue to mobilize against this project.”
As the debate rages on, the iconic stadium’s future hangs in the balance, with stakeholders divided over the best path forward for this historic sporting venue.
