Saudi club targets Liverpool star as potential €200 million replacement
Despite Liverpool’s recent 4-0 FA Cup victory over Accrington Stanley, uncertainty surrounds the futures of key players like Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold. While Virgil van Dijk appears close to signing a new deal, another surprising departure may be on the horizon.
According to reports, Darwin Nunez has emerged as a transfer target for Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. The wealthy club is looking to offload former €200 million signing Neymar and sees Nunez as a potential replacement. Al-Hilal’s interest is notable as they are managed by Jorge Jesus, who previously coached Nunez at Benfica.
Nunez has struggled to cement his place in Liverpool’s starting lineup under new manager Arne Slot. Former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler recently stated Nunez is “not at Liverpool’s level”, fueling speculation about his future. A big-money move to Saudi Arabia could suit all parties, especially if Al-Hilal offers a fee close to the €100 million Liverpool paid for Nunez.
While losing Nunez would be a blow, Liverpool have proven adept at replacing departed attackers in the past. The club seamlessly transitioned after Sadio Mane’s exit by bringing in players like Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo. Mohamed Salah has continued his prolific form, while other forwards have stepped up to fill the void.
If Nunez does depart for Al-Hilal, Liverpool would likely reinvest the funds to further strengthen their already formidable attack. As they showed after Mane’s departure, the club has a knack for identifying and integrating new offensive talent. While initially disappointing, Nunez’s potential exit could ultimately provide an opportunity for Liverpool to evolve their front line once again.
