Serie A: Como 1-1 Venezia – Late Penalty Denies Fabregas’ Team Victory

Venezia continued their unbeaten streak to three games thanks to a penalty from Christian Gytkjaer in the final moments of the match. This occurred after Jonathan Ikone had given Como, managed by Cesc Fabregas, the lead.

Como’s recent run of two wins was halted by a 2-1 loss to Roma. In this game against Venezia, they were without key players Marc Oliver Kempf and Mergim Vojvoda due to suspension, and Sergi Roberto and Ivan Azon were injured. Venezia, despite missing Marin Sverko, Michael Svoboda, Richie Sagrado, and Filip Stankovic, and coming off two goalless draws against Lazio and Atalanta, were still near the bottom of the league table.

In the 22nd minute, Como had a great chance when Ivan Smolcic headed a corner from Lucas Da Cunha, but Ionut Radu made an impressive save, tipping the ball onto the post.

Venezia’s goalkeeper, Jean Butez, blocked a close-range shot from Alessio Zerbin. Butez then made two incredible saves in quick succession, first from a powerful volley by Alfred Duncan and then from Duncan’s header on the subsequent corner.

Nico Paz of Como shot narrowly wide, and Butez was caught out of position after chasing Duncan, but Venezia missed an open goal opportunity when Mirko Maric shot over the bar.

Fabregas made two substitutions at halftime, which quickly paid off. Jonathan Ikone dispossessed a Venezia player in midfield and passed the ball through. Although Hans Nicolussi Caviglia intercepted the pass, it rebounded back to Ikone, who scored into the bottom corner through a crowd of players.

This goal ended Venezia’s two-game clean sheet run. Radu continued to perform well, making two excellent saves from an Ikone shot and then a point-blank header from Edoardo Goldaniga following a corner.

Late in added time, Smolcic fouled Franco Carboni, conceding a penalty. Gytkjaer calmly converted the penalty into the top of the net with the last kick of the match, securing Venezia’s third consecutive draw.
