Serie A: Empoli and Cagliari Play Out Goalless Draw
Empoli and Cagliari played out a disappointing 0-0 draw at the Stadio Carlo Castellani on Saturday, with the result suiting the visiting Sardinians more in their battle against relegation from Serie A.
The hosts Empoli have now gone four months without a league victory, while Cagliari inched further away from the drop zone with a valuable away point. Neither side was able to create many clear-cut chances in a match lacking quality and excitement.
Empoli’s best opportunity came midway through the second half when Sebastiano Esposito broke through on goal, only for teammate Liberato Cacace to inadvertently block his shot. Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile was rarely troubled otherwise.
At the other end, Nicolas Viola went closest for Cagliari with a free-kick that narrowly missed the top corner early in the second period. The visitors were content to sit back and defend their point as the match wore on.
The draw leaves Empoli still looking nervously over their shoulders near the bottom of the table, while Cagliari edge closer to safety. Neither manager will be satisfied with the quality on display, but the point suits Cagliari’s purposes far more as they aim to secure their Serie A status for another season.
