Serie A: Inter Cruise Past Cagliari 3-0 as Lautaro Martinez Ends Goal Drought
Inter Milan recorded a convincing 3-0 win away at Cagliari in Serie A on Thursday, with Lautaro Martinez finally ending his two-month league scoring drought. The victory keeps Inter in touching distance of league leaders Atalanta.
Alessandro Bastoni opened the scoring early in the second half with a looping header that caught out Cagliari goalkeeper Simone Scuffet. Martinez then doubled Inter’s lead in the 71st minute, sliding in at the back post to convert a Nicolò Barella cross.
Hakan Calhanoglu sealed the win from the penalty spot after Mateusz Wieteska was penalized for handball. The result maintains Inter’s strong form as they gear up for the Supercoppa Italiana in early January.
Inter dominated possession and created the better chances throughout. Lautaro Martinez and Marcus Thuram both went close in the first half but were denied by Scuffet. Cagliari struggled to create clear opportunities, with Roberto Piccoli’s effort well saved by Yann Sommer their best opening.
The win moves Inter to within three points of Serie A leaders Atalanta. For Cagliari, the defeat leaves them in the relegation zone after a fourth straight league loss.
