The second round of the inaugural Serie A Women`s Cup group stage kicked off with impressive victories for Inter and Roma, both maintaining their flawless start to the tournament.
Roma Edges Past Milan
In a closely contested match, Roma secured a narrow win against Milan. The decisive goal came from 17-year-old substitute Giulia Galli, who replaced former Juventus midfielder Valentina Bergamaschi around the 60-minute mark. Despite the Giallorossi`s victory, Milan proved to be formidable opponents against a stronger Roman side.
Inter Overcomes Fiorentina
Inter emerged victorious with a 3-1 win over Fiorentina, despite a late red card for goalscorer Haley Bugeja. The Nerazzurri got off to a flying start with Elisa Polli scoring in the second minute, followed by Karolina Vilhjalmsdottir doubling the lead just two minutes later. Fiorentina`s Sofie Bredgaard pulled one back in the 68th minute, but Bugeja`s goal ten minutes later sealed the win for Inter. However, Bugeja received a second yellow card in the 90th minute and was sent off.
Serie A Women`s Cup: A New Format
The FIGC council approved a change in format for the 2025-26 season of women`s football in Italy last June. The newly introduced Serie A Women`s Cup involves all 12 Serie A Women clubs competing for a trophy before the league season begins in October.
The tournament structure consists of three groups of four teams. The top team from each group qualifies for the knockout stage, along with the best second-placed side. The competition then progresses to single-leg semi-finals and a final to determine the champions.
