Spalletti: “Italy can still beat Germany in the return leg”

Italy coach Luciano Spalletti remains confident in his team’s abilities despite a 2-1 home loss to Germany in the first leg of their Nations League quarter-final match. Spalletti insists there is no significant gap between the two sides and believes Italy can still advance.

“Based on this match, I don’t see a gap between us,” Spalletti stated. “The difference was in how the crucial moments were handled. They capitalized on their height advantage and limited chances, while we didn’t make the most of ours. That sums up the game.”

The coach praised his team’s character and performance, saying he complimented the players in the locker room. “We were never outplayed tonight,” he emphasized. “I’m convinced we can put in a strong showing in Germany. We’ll evaluate the outcome after that match.”

Spalletti addressed concerns about conceding from set pieces, urging the team not to dwell on it. “We defended well against many corners in the first half. Germany has this strength and utilized it effectively. We can counter with our own qualities,” he explained.

The coach also provided updates on player injuries, including Riccardo Calafiori’s knee concern and Andrea Cambiaso’s improving condition. He praised Sandro Tonali’s goal-scoring performance and Moise Kean’s efforts up front against Germany’s aggressive defense.

Looking ahead to the second leg, Spalletti said they would assess the fitness of Matteo Politano and Mattia Zaccagni, with potential call-ups for Tommaso Baldanzi or another winger if needed.

Despite the challenging task of overturning the deficit in Germany, Spalletti remains optimistic about Italy’s chances to progress in the Nations League.
