Following Italy`s disastrous 3-0 loss to Norway in their opening World Cup qualifier, coach Luciano Spalletti admitted the team needs to engage in serious self-reflection. He also hinted that his position may be in jeopardy.
The Azzurri found themselves in a 3-0 hole by halftime, conceding goals to Alexander Sorloth, Antonio Nusa, and Erling Haaland. Spalletti attributed the poor start to avoidable mistakes and Norway`s ability to exploit open spaces.
“We gave up an early goal that could have been prevented. After that, they took advantage of the open areas with some individual brilliance that caused us problems,” Spalletti explained in a post-match interview.
Acknowledging Italy`s Shortcomings
The coach recognized the lack of creativity and inability to break down Norway`s defense after going behind. “Once we were down 2-0, they sat back, making it difficult to find openings. We especially lacked players who could take on defenders one-on-one,” he noted.
With only the group winner advancing directly to the World Cup, this defeat deals a significant blow to Italy`s qualification hopes. The runner-up will face a playoff, a stage where Italy has faltered in the past two World Cup cycles.
Spalletti Open to Evaluation
When asked if this result puts his project in doubt, Spalletti stood by his player selections but left the door open for review. “I chose this group because I believed in their quality. However, if we`re so fragile that we can`t maintain an offside trap or press opponents, there`s clearly a lack of confidence,” he admitted.
The coach added that he needs to discuss the situation with the federation president regarding their view on his decisions. “After a performance like that, you have to ask yourself questions and recognize there are issues to address,” Spalletti concluded.
Italy will look to rebound quickly as they host Moldova in their next qualifier on Monday evening.
