Spalletti Suggests Liverpool Experience Could Benefit Chiesa, But Italy Must Improve
Italy’s national team coach Luciano Spalletti believes Federico Chiesa may have gained valuable insights during his time at Liverpool, but emphasizes that the Azzurri need to enhance their physicality to compete with top international teams.
Spalletti indicated that Chiesa could potentially return to the national squad, though he stressed the importance of Italy improving their overall physical prowess. Chiesa has been absent from the Italian team since the 2024 European Championship, largely due to injury issues at Liverpool.
The former Juventus player missed much of the pre-season training in Turin before finalizing a permanent transfer to Liverpool in August. He has recently resumed playing for the Reds, recording one assist in four appearances this season.
Spalletti praised Chiesa’s ability to create opportunities and challenge defenses, but noted that consistent playing time is crucial for his development. When asked if joining Liverpool was a misstep for Chiesa, Spalletti replied, “I’m uncertain, but perhaps he’s learned things there that will aid his further development.”
The coach emphasized that while Chiesa could contribute to any team in any league, improvements in physical impact are necessary. Spalletti pointed out Italy’s struggles against France’s intensity and physicality as an area where the team needs to make significant progress.
Concluding his remarks, Spalletti commended Napoli and Antonio Conte for their strong performances in the current Serie A season, noting Napoli’s clear identity and solid foundation under Conte’s leadership.
