Spurs may regret losing “world-class” Premier League star who was their original Tel
Tottenham Hotspur have had a challenging season, but recent developments have given fans reason for optimism. The team showed improved defensive solidity in their Premier League win against Brentford, and the club strengthened the squad before the transfer window closed.
Spurs signed RC Lens center-back Kevin Danso on loan with an obligation to buy for £20.9 million. They also secured exciting Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel on loan with an option to buy for £45 million.
Tel, dubbed a “mind-blowing” talent by scouts, scored 10 goals and provided 6 assists in just 1406 minutes for Bayern last season. The versatile 19-year-old can play across the front line and will give manager Ange Postecoglou more attacking options.
However, Spurs may regret losing a former youth player who has drawn comparisons to Tel – Chelsea’s Noni Madueke. The 22-year-old left Tottenham’s academy for PSV Eindhoven in 2018 before joining Chelsea for £30 million in 2023.
Madueke has impressed this season with 8 goals and 4 assists in 22 appearances for Chelsea. Statistical analysis shows he is very similar to Tel in metrics like progressive passes, expected assists, and successful take-ons per 90 minutes.
While Tel may have a higher ceiling, Madueke could have flourished under an attacking manager like Postecoglou. Ultimately, Spurs have done well to sign Tel, but having both exciting young wingers would have made their attack even more potent.
