Szczesny: From Beach to Barcelona’s Goal – A Goalkeeper’s Journey
Wojciech Szczesny, Barcelona’s current goalkeeper, recently spoke to the media ahead of the Champions League quarter-final second leg. The Polish keeper has been in exceptional form since joining the Catalan giants in October, maintaining an impressive 22-game unbeaten streak.
Addressing the imminent return of Marc-André ter Stegen from injury, Szczesny expressed his respect for his German counterpart: “I’m here to fill in for Ter Stegen, but I want to play in this competition. Whatever happens, I’ll respect the decision. We have a good relationship. Marc has been playing at a very high level for a long time and has won a Champions League. Comparing us doesn’t make sense. He’s returning to training after a major injury, and when he’s fully recovered, there won’t be many goalkeepers who can compete with his level.”
Szczesny emphasized that there’s no tension between them, as both prioritize the team’s success. Regarding his own future at Barcelona, he remains focused on the present: “My contract runs until the end of the season, and I’m concentrating on the matches. I won’t waste energy on future concerns or contract negotiations. I’m focused on tomorrow’s game and giving my best performance.”
Reflecting on his unexpected opportunity, Szczesny shared, “A few months ago, I was on the beach and didn’t want to play football. Now I’m at one of the best teams in Europe. When you win matches, you feel incredible. I love it. Winning is what I enjoy most.”
The Polish goalkeeper expressed his motivation to win trophies with Barcelona, particularly the Champions League, a title he has yet to claim in his career: “I want to win major trophies. I’m getting closer to winning this competition.”
