Takumi Minamino: Finding His Stride at Monaco

After a challenging debut season at AS Monaco, Japanese midfielder Takumi Minamino has found his footing in Ligue 1. Initially struggling to adapt, Minamino’s turnaround has been remarkable, showcasing his mental fortitude and ability to overcome adversity.

The arrival of manager Adi Hütter, who previously worked with Minamino at RB Salzburg, proved to be a turning point. Hütter’s implementation of the Red Bull style of play, familiar to Minamino, allowed the player to flourish. In his second season, Minamino scored nine goals in Ligue 1, becoming a crucial link between midfield and attack.

Despite Monaco’s focus on developing young talent, Minamino’s experience and consistent performances have made him indispensable. At 28, he is now the oldest player in the squad, tasked with balancing the team’s youthful energy.

However, increased competition from emerging talents like Maghnes Akliouche and Eliesse Ben Seghir has reduced Minamino’s playing time this season. Still, he continues to make significant contributions when called upon, demonstrating his value to the team.

As Monaco aims to showcase its young stars in the Champions League, Minamino’s role has evolved. While he may not always be in the starting lineup, his impact remains undeniable. With three goals and three assists in 20 appearances this season, Minamino continues to be a key asset for Monaco, adapting to the club’s strategy while maintaining his understated yet effective presence on the field.
