Tensions Flare as Montpellier’s Khazri Reacts to Fan Taunts

Montpellier HSC’s disappointing season reached a new low on Sunday when forward Wahbi Khazri nearly confronted fans over insulting chants. The incident occurred after the team’s relegation to Ligue 2 was confirmed, even before their match against Stade de Reims.

The club’s struggles this season have been marked by financial difficulties and internal discord. Veteran players like Khazri and Téji Savanier have faced particular criticism from supporters. Both were booed upon entering the game as substitutes during Sunday’s goalless draw with Reims.

Following the match, tensions escalated when fans directed weight-related chants at Khazri and Savanier. According to reports, supporters sang, “A calzone for Khazri, a snack for Téji,” mocking the players’ perceived fitness issues. Khazri took particular offense to these taunts and had to be restrained from confronting the fans directly.

This incident underscores the growing rift between Montpellier’s players and supporters as the club faces relegation. Khazri is set to depart when his contract expires at the season’s end, with several other experienced players expected to follow suit.

As Montpellier prepares for life in Ligue 2, the club must address not only its on-field performance but also the fractured relationship with its fan base to chart a path forward.
