The Rapid Decline of Thiago Motta’s Juventus Project
Thiago Motta’s brief tenure as Juventus manager came to an abrupt end after just 284 days. His appointment in June 2024 was meant to spearhead a long-term project to return Juventus to title contention, but the experiment failed spectacularly.
Despite early promise, including impressive wins against Manchester City and RB Leipzig, Juventus struggled with consistency. Too many draws against weaker opposition highlighted underlying issues. The team’s elimination from the Champions League and Coppa Italia by PSV and Empoli respectively were major setbacks.
Internal conflicts arose, with Motta clashing with veteran players like Danilo. The departure of experienced leaders left a vacuum in the dressing room. Motta’s handling of the captaincy and playing time for key players like Dusan Vlahovic created further tension.
Tactically, Juventus appeared confused in recent matches. Their 4-0 home defeat to Atalanta was the club’s worst in over 50 years. With just 52 points from 29 Serie A matches, it marks Juventus’ worst league performance in 13 years.
While Motta bears significant responsibility, the club’s leadership and recruitment also face scrutiny. Expensive signings like Douglas Luiz and Teun Koopmeiners failed to justify their price tags. Meanwhile, departing players like Nicolò Fagioli have flourished elsewhere.
As Igor Tudor takes over for the season’s final stretch, Juventus faces an uphill battle to salvage a top-four finish. This disappointing campaign may lead to further changes beyond just the manager’s position as the club seeks to rebuild.
