Sandro Tonali, the Italian midfielder currently playing for Newcastle United, has shared his thoughts on a possible return to Serie A, his experience working with national team coach Gennaro Gattuso, and his reaction to being labeled the Premier League`s top midfielder.
While discussing Italy`s upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Estonia and Israel, Tonali expressed enthusiasm about training under Gattuso. “We`re having a great time in training. Gattuso pushes us hard but also ensures we enjoy ourselves, which is crucial,” Tonali stated.
Tonali, who idolized Gattuso in his youth, revealed a personal anecdote: “I used to have a mug with Gattuso`s picture on it. I drank from it every morning for years until it broke. I managed to piece it back together and still have it.”
Regarding a potential return to Serie A, Tonali remained open but focused on his current success: “As an Italian, there`s always a chance of returning to Serie A, even if it`s just 1%. However, I`m in a good place right now and things are going well. I`d never completely rule out Serie A – it`s my home country and the league is constantly improving.”
When asked about Paul Scholes` recent comment naming him the best midfielder in the Premier League, Tonali responded humbly: “It`s surprising and pleasing to receive such compliments from legendary players. It`s truly wonderful.”
Looking ahead, Tonali aspires to continue his development and make a significant impact in both the Premier League and international football.
