Tottenham targeting £60m summer deal for “exceptional” defender upgrade
Tottenham Hotspur have endured a disappointing 2024/25 season, currently sitting in the bottom half of the Premier League table. However, they could still salvage the campaign by winning the Europa League.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Spurs are already eyeing potential reinforcements. According to journalist Christian Falk, the North London club are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen center-back Piero Hincapie.
The 23-year-old Ecuadorian international is valued at around £60 million by Leverkusen. Liverpool and Chelsea are also reportedly keen on the defender.
Hincapie has made 39 appearances across all competitions this season, contributing 5 goals and assists. His potential arrival could provide an upgrade to Tottenham’s backline, which has struggled with injuries this term.
The Leverkusen star has outperformed current Spurs defender Micky van de Ven statistically this season:
- More progressive carries and passes per 90 minutes
- Higher tackle win percentage
- More interceptions
- Better aerial duel success rate
While van de Ven has shown promise since joining Tottenham in 2023, recurring hamstring issues have hampered his progress. Hincapie could offer the defensive solidity and ball-playing ability Spurs have lacked.
Though the £60m price tag represents a significant investment, Hincapie’s arrival could help address Tottenham’s defensive frailties as they look to rebound from a disappointing campaign.
