Udinese Fans Rally for Positive Atmosphere as Maignan Visits
Udinese supporter groups are calling on fans to showcase their inclusive spirit when AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan returns to the Bluenergy Stadium. This visit marks Maignan’s first appearance at the venue since a regrettable incident involving racist abuse last season.
During the previous encounter, Maignan was subjected to repeated racial slurs from a section behind the goal. This led to the implementation of Serie A’s anti-racism protocol, including a stadium announcement warning of potential match suspension. When the abuse persisted, Maignan and his teammates temporarily left the field in protest.
In response, Udinese cooperated with authorities to identify four individuals responsible for the racist behavior, resulting in their lifetime bans from the stadium. However, tension remains high as Maignan prepares to return for Friday’s Serie A Week 32 fixture.
Fan Groups Promote Positive Behavior
The Curva Nord group released a statement urging supporters to express their sentiments appropriately: “Let’s demonstrate that Friuli, Udine, and the Curva Nord are not racist. We must voice our opinions civilly, avoiding discriminatory actions. Let’s fill the stadium with black and white, waving our scarves and flags to support our team’s victory.”
Bepi Marcon, President of the Association of Udinese Clubs, suggested a different approach: “The best response is complete indifference. We condemn all forms of racism. Last season’s incident, involving a small group of individuals, unfairly tarnished Friuli’s reputation. I hope nothing similar occurs again, but if there are jeers, indifference is the most effective response.”
As the match approaches, all eyes will be on the Udinese supporters to see how they respond to this challenging situation and whether they can create a respectful atmosphere for all players on the field.
