Ulivieri’s Journey: Overcoming Health Challenges and Reflecting on Football Career
Renzo Ulivieri, the 83-year-old president of the Italian Football Coaches Association, recently opened up about his harrowing health experience and reflections on his career. In a candid interview, Ulivieri revealed his brush with death, significant weight loss, and newfound perspectives on life and football.
“I faced a life-threatening situation,” Ulivieri shared. “After four months in the hospital, three surgeries for a severe intestinal issue, and losing 14 kilograms, I feared I wouldn’t make it. Fortunately, I fell ill in Rome during a national team match and received excellent care at Santo Spirito Hospital.”
The health scare prompted Ulivieri to reassess his life. He married his partner Manuela and began working on an innovative project – walking football. “It’s ideal for seniors, promoting both physical and mental health,” he explained.
Reflecting on his coaching career, Ulivieri reminisced about his experiences with various teams and players. He addressed past controversies, including his dispute with Roberto Baggio, stating, “The numbers speak for themselves: more appearances, more goals, and a return to the national team for Roberto under my guidance.”
Despite his age, Ulivieri plans to run for re-election as president of the coaches’ association. “Some might say I’m old, but I have the spirit of a youngster,” he asserted. “We still have work to do, particularly ensuring every team affiliated with FIGC is led by a qualified coach.”
Ulivieri also expressed support for the current FIGC president, Gabriele Gravina, emphasizing the need for stability in football. His story serves as a testament to resilience and passion for the sport, even in the face of life-altering challenges.
