Viareggio Cup: Serie D Eliminated by Controversial ‘Ghost’ Own Goal

Rijeka has advanced to the semi-finals of the Viareggio Cup after a highly contentious match. The Croatian side initially took the lead through Samateh, but Sall quickly secured the equalizer for the Serie D Representative team.

The decisive moment of the game occurred in the 33rd minute of the second half. A controversial incident, seen and decided upon solely by the linesman, resulted in what has been described as a ‘ghost’ own goal, leading to the Serie D team’s elimination. The tournament, also known as the Versilia tournament, notably lacks Goal Line Technology (GLT), a factor that has fueled debate over the disputed decision.

Despite their unfortunate exit, individual performances for the Serie D Representative squad were acknowledged. Sall was highlighted for his crucial goal-scoring effort, Pigato for his tenacious fighting spirit throughout the match, and Penta for his solid and consistent presence on the field.
