Vieira Gains Valuable Insights from Genoa’s First Loss Under His Leadership
Patrick Vieira, Genoa’s new manager, expressed that he learned a great deal about his squad despite experiencing his first defeat on the bench. The team showed resilience against Napoli in a closely contested match.
The game at Marassi was a tale of two halves. Napoli dominated the first period, with Andre Frank Zambo Anguissa and Amir Rrahmani scoring from headers. However, Genoa mounted a strong comeback after the break, with Andrea Pinamonti finding the net and Mario Balotelli coming close to equalizing.
Vieira commented on the team’s improved second-half performance: “We displayed more aggression and pushed higher up the pitch. It’s unfortunate we couldn’t equalize, as we deserved to. I’ve told the players that if we maintain this level of play, we’ll secure more victories than defeats.”
The coach praised the team’s character, especially considering they had kept three consecutive clean sheets prior to this match. The fierce comeback attempt in the second half was particularly encouraging for Vieira.
“We employed a similar strategy against Milan and earned a point. When facing title contenders, we need to be more aggressive, and we demonstrated that courage after halftime. As a coach, I gained valuable insights about the team today,” Vieira explained.
He also commented on individual performances, including Vitinha’s unexpected start and Balotelli’s impactful substitute appearance. Vieira emphasized the importance of continued hard work and quality from all squad members.
Despite the loss, Vieira remains optimistic about Genoa’s future performances based on the fighting spirit and quality shown in the second half against a strong Napoli side.
