English defender Kyle Walker has opened up about his short-lived loan spell at AC Milan during the 2024-25 season. While acknowledging that joining the Italian club might not have been the best decision, Walker maintains he has no regrets about the experience.
The former Manchester City captain, who now plays for Burnley in the Premier League, moved to San Siro on a six-month loan deal in January 2025. However, his time in Italy coincided with a disappointing season for Milan, who finished eighth in Serie A and missed out on European qualification.
“In hindsight, I probably should have stayed with my teammates at City,” Walker admitted in a recent interview. “But for the first time in my career, I made a selfish decision. I wanted to play regularly and prove I could still perform at a high level.”
Despite the challenges he faced in Milan, Walker values the opportunity to have played abroad. “I`ve always wanted to experience football in another country, so I`m glad I had those six months. It didn`t go as well as I`d hoped, but I think everyone at the club would agree it was a season to forget.”
The defender`s loan move came after he fell out of favor under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City. Milan opted not to make the transfer permanent, allowing Walker to return to England where he subsequently joined Burnley.
Reflecting on his time in Italy, Walker concluded, “I could have performed better, but I don`t regret the decision. I still have friends at Milan and follow their results. It was a valuable experience, even if it wasn`t entirely successful.”
