West Ham considering low-cost move for Potter’s first “impressive” signing
After suffering their second defeat in three matches under new manager Graham Potter against London rivals Crystal Palace, West Ham United are reportedly looking to make their first signing under the new boss.
Despite an initially promising summer transfer window that brought in players like Jean-Clair Todibo and Niclas Fullkrug, as well as appointing Julen Lopetegui to replace David Moyes, things did not work out as planned for West Ham. Lopetegui never seemed to be the right fit, and his dismissal appeared inevitable as poor results mounted. Now, Potter has been tasked with turning things around.
To aid in that effort, West Ham are likely to return to the transfer market to provide Potter with reinforcements of his own. According to reports, one potential target is England international Angel Gomes.
TalkSport reports that West Ham are preparing a move to sign Gomes on a free transfer when his contract expires at the end of the season. This could prove to be one of the bargains of the summer if the Hammers can secure his signature ahead of other interested Premier League clubs.
The 24-year-old Lille midfielder has unfinished business in the Premier League after leaving Manchester United and finding his best form in France. A return to England with West Ham could give him the chance to prove himself against his former club.
After earning a surprise England call-up last year, Gomes has done enough to deserve another shot in the Premier League. His technical skills could thrive at West Ham alongside the more physical Tomas Soucek in midfield.
Described as “impressive” by analysts, Gomes is entering the prime of his career at age 24. This summer’s opportunity to sign him on a free transfer is one West Ham should not pass up as Potter looks to put his stamp on the squad.
