West Ham Make Strong Push to Sign “Special” Midfielder Angel Gomes
West Ham United are making a concerted effort to acquire Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, viewing him as a potential key addition to strengthen their midfield. Since Graham Potter took over as manager, West Ham have shown defensive vulnerabilities, conceding two goals in each of their last three matches despite tactical changes.
Potter has implemented a more aggressive man-to-man pressing system, particularly when defending opposition goal kicks. This approach requires greater mobility and athleticism in midfield to press effectively and cover ground. As a result, West Ham have been linked with several midfield targets this transfer window.
According to reports, West Ham are in talks with Gomes’ representatives and are “really pushing” to complete a deal for the 24-year-old England youth international. With Gomes’ contract expiring this summer, he could potentially sign a pre-contract agreement now for a free transfer in June. Alternatively, Lille may be open to selling him this month to avoid losing him for free.
Gomes would provide the mobility Potter desires in midfield while also offering excellent technical ability and passing range to help control possession. His stats compare favorably to current West Ham midfielder Edson Alvarez, with Gomes completing more passes at a higher accuracy and providing more assists per 90 minutes.
Former Lille manager Jocelyn Gourvennec described Gomes as a “special” talent. His busy, proactive style of play and ability to dictate tempo could allow West Ham to play through midfield with greater control, rather than relying on direct long balls. While West Ham have also been linked to younger prospects like Ezechiel Banzuzi, Gomes appears ready to make an immediate impact on the first team.
If West Ham can complete deals for both Gomes and Banzuzi, it would significantly upgrade their midfield options. However, the experienced and technically gifted Gomes seems the priority target to slot straight into Potter’s starting lineup and elevate West Ham’s play in the center of the park.
