Wolves Pursuing “Exceptional” £12m Defender Excelling Beyond His Current League
Wolverhampton Wanderers are monitoring Millwall center-back Japhet Tanganga, who is performing at a level surpassing the Championship, according to former England international Carlton Palmer.
With Wolves’ Premier League status uncertain as they sit just two points clear of the relegation zone, their defensive woes have been a key factor, conceding 54 goals in 25 matches. This suggests the need for backline reinforcements regardless of which division they compete in next season.
Palmer revealed to Football League World that Wolves and West Ham are among the clubs tracking Tanganga, who has impressed at Millwall after overcoming injury struggles. The pundit stated: “He is clearly above this level. We all recognize his quality, but injuries have held him back. The 25-year-old has managed to stay fit this season, playing a crucial role in Millwall’s climb out of relegation danger.”
Millwall reportedly valued Tanganga at £12 million in January, though his price could increase with continued strong performances. Palmer praised the defender’s “tremendous recovery pace” and believes he is Premier League caliber.
While Tanganga could bolster Wolves’ defense regardless of their league status, relegation may hinder their chances of signing him given West Ham’s interest. The former Tottenham player has been one of Millwall’s most consistent performers in the Championship this season and previously demonstrated his Premier League quality in matches against top opposition like Manchester City.
Wolves will need to act decisively to secure Tanganga’s signature, as his talent and potential make him an attractive target for multiple clubs seeking defensive upgrades this summer.
