Italian football legend Gianfranco Zola has expressed his admiration for Scott McTominay’s performances with Napoli this season. However, he maintains that Inter Milan are the leading contenders for the Serie A title.
Napoli and Inter are engaged in a tight race for the Serie A championship. Napoli needed to secure victory against Fiorentina to close the gap to just one point behind Inter in the league standings.
Inter recently claimed a 3-2 victory over Monza. Zola believes that Inter’s overall strength makes them the favorites to win Serie A.
“They are a formidable team in every position, boasting significant talent,” Zola stated.
Inter is also the sole Italian team remaining in the Champions League. When asked about their chances in this competition, Zola commented on Inter’s potential to win the Champions League.
“They are a very deep squad, with quality backup options in all areas of the pitch,” Zola explained.
“In theory, they have a chance, but the competition is fierce both domestically and in Europe. They can compete, but it will be challenging.”
“The Champions League demands intense focus and peak performance. It’s tough, but success brings confidence and conviction that compensates for the effort. I don’t see their Champions League run as a disadvantage. Instead, it could be a real advantage.”
Regarding Napoli’s player who has impressed him most this season, Zola immediately named McTominay.
“Scott McTominay,” Zola responded.
“He’s the kind of player you’d highlight as crucial, as the late Rino Tommasi would say.”
Zola also shared his thoughts on a standout player from Fiorentina.
“Moise Kean. He has performed exceptionally well, exceeding my expectations. Credit goes to him and his coach for his significant development.”
Zola anticipated a “great game” between Napoli and Fiorentina.
“Both are strong teams. Napoli are coming off a positive result against Inter, where they also performed well. Fiorentina are enjoying a strong and impressive season. Coach Palladino is proving to be outstanding, which pleases me greatly.”
“[Conte] is a coach who consistently maximizes his teams’ potential,” Zola concluded.
“And when he manages a quality team like Napoli, you see these results. He has a team with an exceptional midfield and strong team spirit, where everyone supports each other and endures challenges together. This mentality is what leads to success.”
