‘He looks happy to me’ – Diego Simeone gives take on Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann futures
Following a commanding Champions League Round of 16 first-leg victory against Tottenham Hotspur at the Metropolitano, where Atletico Madrid secured a three-goal lead, post-match discussions heavily centered on the futures of key forwards Antoine Griezmann and Julian Alvarez.
Coach Simeone expressed satisfaction with his team's display. While Tottenham's early errors were highlighted, Simeone asserted that these mistakes were a direct result of Atletico's relentless pressure. He also cautioned that the return leg would be far from straightforward.
Speaking to Marca post-game, Simeone stated, "I was pleased with the team's effort; we compelled them into errors, which allowed us to build a substantial lead in the first half. We managed their initial goal against us more effectively. Despite trailing 4-2, we recovered to make it 5-1, thanks to Julian and Griezmann, with one goal coming after a magnificent 50-meter sprint. They later scored due to one of our lapses. We will savor this win, but the Champions League is unforgiving, and no lead guarantees progression."
He continued, "We proactively sought positive outcomes, and they materialized. In the first half, we could have been more clinical and defended better against their goal. In the second half, Oblak made a crucial save at 4-2, and Julian then extended our lead to 5-1. This was a significant win against a formidable English opponent. We anticipate a challenging return leg, typical of European fixtures."
Griezmann Committed to Atletico
Following the match, Griezmann himself confirmed to supporters that he intends to remain with the club until the season concludes, despite recent interest from Major League Soccer team Orlando City.
Simeone remarked on Griezmann's declaration, saying, "I am very pleased with Antoine's clarification. He understands his immense significance to Atletico's history. My hope is for him to conclude the season in the best possible manner, as he merits, so we can collectively achieve an extraordinary season."
He added, "I always wish him the very best. I hope he concludes this season successfully. We need his unique blend of vision, talent, and relentless running."
Simeone on Julian Alvarez's Future
In contrast, Julian Alvarez did not offer a definitive assurance regarding his presence at the Metropolitano next season. However, Simeone appeared unperturbed by the forward's non-committal stance.
Simeone commented on Alvarez, stating, "To me, he looks happy and content, consistently scoring goals. This club has been his most prolific in terms of goal-scoring. He appears dedicated, positive, and has regained his top form. I am delighted for him and sincerely hope he remains with us for many years. Our aim is to build a strong team that encourages him to stay."
Atletico Madrid's next fixture is against Getafe this Saturday at 16:15 CEST, a match crucial for solidifying their position in the top four.
