Lionel Messi Bids Farewell to Argentina International Career
Lionel Messi has ended his international career with Argentina, thanking fans and former teammates. The 39-year-old scored in his final match against Benin, concluding his national team journey after winning the 2022 World Cup.
As a Barcelona legend, Messi holds the record for most Argentina goals with 126, also leading his country to two Copa América titles. He will continue playing for Inter Miami but has worn the iconic blue and white jersey for the last time.
In a statement on Instagram, Messi shared his feelings about leaving his national team and paid homage to the late Diego Maradona.
Messi's Full Statement:
“Yesterday was my last game, and I already miss wearing the blue and white. I know I’m making the right decision. It was an incredible journey, full of joys and some sorrows, but I’m certain every step was worth it.
It’s impossible to express everything I feel in a few words. This journey wouldn't have been possible without my family, who always stood by me, especially during the difficult times. 🙏
My friends, teammates, and coaches, along with their staff, were also essential. I must also mention Diego, who placed our country where it belonged. I know he helped us, both then and now, from above, with every step we took.
Thank you to the clubs I played for, for always respecting my feelings and allowing me to dedicate myself to my country when it was time. And, of course, thank God: without His guidance, we wouldn’t even have dreamed of reaching this point.
I am a grateful person. I love you all, I will miss you, and I will always thank you for being by my side.”
